The sensible minimum
Handles steam and occasional spills. A common choice for base units away from the sink, and for wall units.
For the wet zone
Phenolic-bonded and made for regular contact with water. Priced a tier above BWR from the same brand; worth it under the sink and next to the dishwasher or RO.
A dense engineered board
Smooth, dense and moisture-resistant. Popular for shutters and panels; some kitchens also use it for carcasses. Price it against plywood for your own kitchen.

How much do the shutter finish and hardware add?
Together, these are the two lines most likely to push a quote up, because both are visible and both have long upgrade ladders.
Shutter finish. Laminate is the most economical and the most forgiving. Membrane sits a step up. Acrylic and PU are the premium finishes, and PU usually sits at the top because it is sprayed and cured in several coats. Hardware. Hinges, drawer channels, lift-up fittings and baskets are priced by brand and by count. The same kitchen can carry four drawers or ten, one corner solution or none. A modular kitchen quotation usually covers the cabinets, shutters and the listed hardware. The countertop, sink and tap, chimney, hob and other appliances, tiles, and any plumbing or electrical changes are often priced separately or left to you. Ask every kitchen maker, including Sri Sri Plywoods, to list inclusions and exclusions in writing.
These exclusions are normal, not a trick. Many homeowners already own a chimney, or want to choose the stone themselves. The problem only starts when one quote includes them and another does not, and the cheaper-looking quote turns out to be the smaller kitchen.
- Countertop: material, thickness, edge profile and the sink and hob cut-outs.
- Chimney and hob: plus the duct and the wall opening for the exhaust.
- Sink and tap: single or double bowl, and who fits the waste pipe.
- Civil and electrical work: shifting a water point, new sockets for the chimney, RO, microwave and fridge.
- Tiles and painting: the backsplash and the wall above the units.
- Loft units and end panels: sometimes counted as extras rather than part of the running foot.
How do you compare two modular kitchen quotations?
Put the quotes side by side and make them describe the same kitchen before you look at the total. A good quotation, with a material breakdown, makes this easy.
- Check the measurement method. Running feet or square feet, and whether wall units and lofts are counted in it.
- Match the carcass board. Brand, grade (BWR, BWP) or HDHMR, and thickness, written against each zone.
- Match the shutter finish. Laminate, membrane, acrylic or PU, with the brand, and whether the inside faces are laminated too.
- Match the hardware. Brand and type for hinges, channels and lift-ups, and the number of drawers and baskets.
- Match the scope. Countertop, sink, chimney, hob, installation, transport, and any civil or electrical work.

If one quote will not itemise, treat its total with caution. A headline rate with no specification cannot be compared with anything.
How should you budget for a modular kitchen?
Budget in tiers, and decide early which parts of the kitchen deserve the upper tier. The tiers below are relative, not price bands.
Built to last, plain to look at
BWR carcass with BWP under the sink, laminate shutters, branded soft-close hinges, a straight or L layout, and only the baskets you will use daily.
Upgrade what you touch
The same carcass, a better laminate or membrane finish, more drawers instead of doors in the cooking zone, and one good corner solution.
Upgrade what you see
Acrylic or PU shutters, a tall pantry unit, lift-up wall units, and a quartz or premium stone countertop.
Whatever the tier, set aside a separate allowance for the lines that sit outside the kitchen quote, such as the chimney, stone and electrical work. List those exclusions first, get a rate for each, and add them to the kitchen quote before you decide what you can afford.
