What is HDHMR board, and how is it different from plywood?
HDHMR stands for high-density, high-moisture-resistance board. It is an engineered board made by pressing fine wood fibres and resin into a dense, uniform sheet, with no layers or grain. Plywood is made from thin wood veneers glued with their grain crossing. Sri Sri Plywoods keeps both on display in Mohali and Ambala so you can compare them.
That difference in make-up explains almost everything about how the two behave. A fibre board is the same all the way through, so it cuts, routes and finishes evenly. A plywood sheet is a set of cross-laid layers, which gives it strength in both directions and, typically, a lighter weight for its thickness.
Action Tesa, one of the brands on display at Sri Sri Plywoods, says its HDHMR is made from eucalyptus fibre, pressed to a density of more than 850 kg/m³ and treated against termites and borers. Other makers use their own recipes, so read each brand's specification rather than assuming they are all the same.

HDHMR vs plywood: which is better for kitchen shutters?
For shutters, HDHMR often has the edge. Its dense, flat and even face takes PU paint, lacquer and acrylic without showing grain or veneer joints, and it machines cleanly for handle grooves and profiles. HDHMR is the natural fit
A smooth, uniform surface means less filling and sanding before the finish goes on, and fewer ghost lines from veneer joints showing through.
Either works, flatness matters
The facing does the visual work, but a flat, stable core helps a glossy panel stay true. Both boards are used here.
Plywood is the everyday choice
Laminate hides the core completely. Plywood's lighter weight and strong screw grip make it a practical, familiar option for laminate shutters.
Check the weight
A dense board is typically heavier sheet for sheet. On tall pantry or loft shutters, ask for hinges rated for the shutter's size and weight.

Should kitchen carcasses be HDHMR or plywood?
The carcass is the box behind the shutter. It carries the counter, the sink, heavy steel utensils, the hob and, on the wall, a row of loaded cabinets hanging from brackets. That is where plywood has long been the default.
- Weight: plywood is typically lighter for its thickness, which matters most for wall and loft units hanging off the wall.
- Long spans: cross-laid veneers help plywood shelves resist bowing over wider units.
- Screws near edges: channels, hinge plates and brackets are screwed into carcass edges and faces. Plywood makers such as Greenply say cross-laid layers grip screws well; Action Tesa says its uniform density gives HDHMR high screw-holding strength. Ask your carpenter what screws and pilot holes they use for whichever board you choose.
- Repairs: a damaged plywood panel can often be re-fixed or patched on site; follow the maker's advice for any board.
HDHMR carcasses are used too, and some families prefer them for the moisture resistance. The honest answer is that the sink base matters more than the board name. Under a tap, choose BWP plywood (or better), seal every cut, and consider a tray or mat under the sink.

Chandigarh's average humidity climbs to about 80% in August, and a kitchen adds steam, spills and wet mopping on top of that. Every wood-based board, HDHMR and plywood alike, takes in some moisture in those months and gives it back in the dry season.
HDHMR is sold as high moisture resistant, not waterproof, and the weak point is almost never the laminated or painted face. It is the cut edge, the hinge hole and the gap where a counter meets the wall. Water that gets into an unsealed edge can make any board swell locally, and swelling in a fibre board is hard to reverse.
- Edge-band every edge, including the hidden ones at the back and bottom of base units.
- Seal cut-outs for the sink, hob and pipes before the counter goes on.
- Finish both faces of every shutter so it takes in and gives out moisture evenly and stays flat.
- Lift base units on legs with a plinth, so mopping water does not sit against the board.
If a shutter does take in water at an edge, dry the area and have the edge re-banded early. A small repair in the first monsoon is far cheaper than replacing a swollen shutter later.
Which material should each kitchen unit use?
Use BWP plywood for the sink base and dishwasher unit, plywood for the other carcasses and wall units, and HDHMR or plywood for shutters depending on the finish. How do you check HDHMR and plywood before you buy?
- Read the markings. Plywood should carry an ISI mark with IS 303 or IS 710 and the grade. HDHMR should carry the brand's name and product markings.
- Look at a cut edge. HDHMR should look dense and even right through; plywood veneers should be tightly packed, without gaps.
- Measure the thickness with a vernier at more than one point on the sheet.
- Ask for the warranty card and read what it covers, including any termite and borer claims.
- Get a GST bill that names the brand, product and thickness.
