What is the difference between telescopic channels and tandem drawer systems?
A telescopic drawer channel is a pair of ball-bearing slides screwed to the sides of a wooden drawer; you can see it when the drawer opens. A "tandem" drawer hides the runners, either under a wooden drawer (undermount) or inside metal drawer sides (a box system). Telescopic is the budget choice; tandem is neater and suits heavy kitchen drawers.

Price is not only the hardware. A telescopic or undermount drawer needs a wooden box built by the carpenter, while a box system supplies the metal sides and needs only a front, a bottom and a back. When you compare quotes, compare the cost of the finished drawer, fitted and adjusted, not the channel alone.
What does "tandem" actually mean?
"Tandem" is a product name. Blum, an Austrian maker, sells a concealed runner called TANDEM and a box drawer system called TANDEMBOX. Over time, Indian shops and carpenters started using "tandem" for any concealed runner or metal-sided drawer, whatever the brand. When you ask for a tandem box, you may be shown very different products, so ask which of the three systems below it is.
The quickest way to tell them apart is to pull the drawer out fully and look. If you see steel rails on both sides of a wooden box, it is a side-mount telescopic channel. If the sides are plain wood and the rails are hidden underneath, it is an undermount runner. If the drawer sides themselves are metal, it is a box system. Each needs a different cabinet and drawer size, so the name on the quote should say which one you are getting.
Telescopic ball-bearing channels
Steel slides with ball bearings, fixed to each side of the drawer. Examples include Hettich's KA runners and Ebco's Sleek telescopic slides.
Concealed runners
Runners hidden under a wooden drawer, so only the drawer shows. Hettich's Actro 5D and Quadro are examples.
Drawer sides and runners in one
Metal drawer sides with the runners built in; you add the front and bottom. Hettich's InnoTech Atira and Häfele's MatrixBox are examples.
Should you choose full extension or partial extension?
Choose full extension for kitchen drawers and deep wardrobe drawers, so the whole drawer comes out and you can reach the back. Partial extension leaves part of the drawer inside the cabinet; it costs less and suits shallow drawers such as pen drawers and bedside tables. Check the label: many soft close telescopic channels are full extension, but not all.
Ebco's Sleek soft close telescopic slide, for example, is listed as full extension, and Hettich's KA 4532 is a full extension side-mounted runner. Some ranges also offer over-extension, which pulls the drawer slightly past the cabinet front. That helps with drawers under a worktop overhang.
What load capacity do kitchen drawer channels need?
Every drawer channel and drawer system has a load rating set by its maker, usually stated for the pair of runners. A few published examples:
- Ebco Sleek telescopic slide (soft close): 35 kg, per Ebco.
- Häfele MatrixBox Premium+: offered in 40 kg and 70 kg versions, per Häfele India.
- Hettich runners: Actro 5D, Quadro and KA are each sold in several load classes, per Hettich.
Indian kitchen drawers carry more than most people expect: steel thalis, katoris, a pressure cooker or a kadhai add up quickly. Pick a load class above what the drawer will really hold; for pot and pressure-cooker drawers, that means heavy-duty runners or a box system in a higher load class. Wide drawers need a higher class too, because the weight spreads across a longer front.
Ask how the rating was tested, too. Häfele India, for example, says its MatrixBox Premium+ is cycle-tested 100,000 times and meets or exceeds LGA certification. A runner that is overloaded every day may still open, but it starts to sag at the front, rub on the drawer below and lose its soft close long before its time.

Soft close brakes the drawer in the last part of its travel so it shuts quietly. Push-to-open lets you open a drawer by pressing its front, which suits handle-less kitchens. Hettich's KA 4532, for example, is sold in separate Silent System (soft close) and Push to open versions, and its Quadro undermount runners offer Silent System and Push to open options.
A third option, self-closing without damping, pulls the drawer shut in the last stretch but does not brake it; Hettich calls this Stop Control on some runners. It is cheaper than soft close, but heavy drawers can still bang.
For a family kitchen, soft close is the everyday choice. Push-to-open is less comfortable on very heavy pot drawers, which take a firm press to release and a firm pull to open fully. How much side clearance do drawer channels need?
Side-mounted telescopic channels need a fixed gap on each side between the drawer and the cabinet. Hettich's KA 4532, for example, has a 12.7 mm installed width. Undermount runners and box systems follow their own sizing formulas instead. Decide the system before the carcass is cut, because the drawer size depends on it.
This is why the choice cannot wait until installation. At Sri Sri Plywoods, kitchen carcasses and shutters are CNC-cut in the workshop, so the drawer system has to be fixed at the design stage. If you are building with a carpenter, give them the maker's installation sheet before any board is cut.
- Measure the cabinet's internal width and depth, not the outside, in millimetres.
- Choose the system (side-mount, undermount or box) and download or ask for its installation sheet.
- Work out the drawer size from the maker's formula: side clearance for telescopic channels, drawer width and bottom recess for undermount runners, internal cabinet width for box systems.
- Match the channel length to the internal depth, choosing the nearest standard length that fits.
- Write the exact product and length on the quote, so the drawer is built for the hardware that arrives.

In Chandigarh Tricity and Ambala, the monsoon adds a damp season to every kitchen, so the drawer next to the sink deserves the most corrosion-resistant hardware in the room. Everywhere else, spend by load and use: the heaviest drawers first, the lightest last.
